Here's a great and free travel tip that will offer you not only a road trip, but also a family friendly spring day in open air, career opportunities, band playing live music, nice people, heroes, blasting jets, as well as grilled sausages and fresh donuts - can you top that?
The Finnish Air Force ('Ilmavoimat') arrange annual open house recruiting days ('Ilmailusta ammatti' in Finnish), free of charge, at all Air Force Command locations around Finland. I've visited Tampere now on two consecutive years, since it's just a two hour drive from Helsinki. So take a day off, pack your family and drive to the nearest base. Everyone will like this without you braking the bank. It doesn't matter whether you are into aircrafts or not, it's all about the trip, show and community. You get to see planes really close both in the air and on the ground, not to mention vehicles, equipment and people who manage all these. You may even get to put on a pilot helmet and get strapped into an ejection seat!
Main event is unexpectedly an amazing air show. Not something you would expect from a free recruiting event. You get to see and hear the planes right in front of you, as you stand on the airfield tarmac, so don't worry about crawling in the bushes. This is great event and very well organized. We can only admire the efficiency of the Finnish air force and thank them for providing this to us for free. Thank You!
